The Republican Party of Pennsylvania capped off its statewide endorsements by throwing its support behind Dave Sunday for Attorney General.

Sunday, the York County District Attorney, got the nod over two other hopefuls – state Rep. Craig Williams (R-Chester/ Delaware) and former federal prosecutor Katayoun ‘Kat’ Copeland.

“Last night my candidacy for Attorney General was endorsed by the Republican Party of Pennsylvania,” said Sunday on the platform formerly known as Twitter. “My family, just like yours, deserves to be safe. This can only be achieved by BOTH aggressively prosecuting criminals (accountability) AND embracing redemption.”

A graduate of Penn State and Widener Law School in 2007, Sunday has served as a legal intern at the United Nations Office of the Secretariat in New York, a law clerk for the Honorable Joseph C. Adams, former President Judge of the York County Court of Common Pleas, and as a prosecutor with the York County District Attorney’s Office.

The PA GOP added Sunday to its four-person endorsement team that includes Dave McCormick for U.S. Senate, Stacy Garrity for State Treasurer, and Tim DeFoor for Auditor General.

“I am thrilled with the experienced team that our State Committee has voted to endorse for the 2024 election,” said Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Lawrence Tabas. “This team is committed, qualified, and prepared. We know they will be invaluable assets to citizens of the Commonwealth and the United States when they are elected in November.”

Pennsylvania Democrats has not endorsed any of its five potential candidates in the race – Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, state Rep. Jared Solomon (D-Philadelphia), former state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, former federal prosecutor Joe Khan, and former head of Philadelphia and Montgomery County’s public defense lawyers Keir Bradford-Grey.

The attorney general’s office has a budget of about $140 million annually and plays a prominent role in arresting drug traffickers, fighting gun trafficking, defending state laws in court and protecting consumers from predatory practices.

No Republican has been elected attorney general since 2008. Candidates must file paperwork by Feb. 13 to appear on the April 23 primary ballot.

Current state Attorney General Michelle Henry, who was appointed to fill the last two years of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s term, does not plan to run for the office.
